Seamless Gutter Installation in Toms River, NJ

Seamless gutters are run off a coil of aluminum right in your driveway, cut to the full length of each eave, so there are no joints along the run to drip or pull apart. We size the gutters and downspouts for the roof, set the pitch, and send the water well clear of the house.

Quick answer

Seamless gutters are one-piece aluminum runs made on site to fit each roof edge, with joints only at the corners. For most Toms River homes we install 5 inch K-style, moving to 6 inch with 3 by 4 inch downspouts on large or steep roofs. Hidden hangers, proper pitch and discharge away from the foundation matter as much as the gutter. Call (732) 419-1462.

Which gutter size and downspout suit your roof?

Sizing comes down to how much water each section of roof dumps into the gutter during a hard downpour. Here are the choices we work with most.

OptionUsually fitsThings to weigh
5 inch K-styleMost ranches, capes and split-levels with average roof areasHandles typical shore storms when downspouts are spaced well
6 inch K-styleLarge colonials, steep roofs, valleys that empty into one cornerCarries roughly 40 percent more water and looks proportional on bigger homes
2 by 3 inch downspoutsShort runs on smaller roofsClog more easily under pine needles and oak leaves
3 by 4 inch downspoutsMost installs we do, and all 6 inch systemsMove water faster and pass debris that would plug a smaller pipe
Heavier .032 inch aluminumExposed bayfront eaves, barrier island homes, long spansResists dents from ladders and ice; costs a bit more than .027 inch

How a seamless gutter install day goes

Most single-family homes take one day, from the old gutters coming down to new ones flowing. Here's the sequence.

  1. Measure every run

We measure each eave, note where valleys concentrate water, and plan downspout locations so water exits well away from walkways, driveways, steps and the foundation.

    Estimate visit
  2. Take down the old system

Old gutters, spikes and downspouts come off, and we check the fascia behind them. Soft or rotted board gets replaced before anything new is hung on it.

    Morning, 1 to 2 hours
  3. Check the drip edge

We make sure the drip edge overhangs into the gutter line so water can't run behind the trough. Where it's missing or short, we slip a gutter apron under the shingles.

    30 to 60 minutes
  4. Make the gutters on site

A gutter machine rolls each run from a single coil of aluminum to the exact length of the eave, so the only seams are at the mitered corners and end caps.

    Late morning
  5. Hang and pitch

Hidden hangers go in about every 2 feet, closer on exposed bayfront eaves, screwed into the rafter tails or fascia. We set a fall of about a quarter inch per 10 feet toward each outlet.

    Midday to afternoon
  6. Downspouts and discharge

Downspouts are strapped to the wall, then extended or set on splash blocks so water lands several feet from the foundation. We run a hose test on every run before we leave.

Where the water lands matters as much as the gutter

A gutter that collects water and then dumps it next to the foundation has only moved the problem. Much of Ocean County sits on sandy soil that drains quickly, but on clay pockets and around older crawlspace homes, a downspout emptying at the wall can soak footings, flood a crawlspace or undermine a slab porch. We extend discharge well away from the house and around walkways so you aren't stepping into a puddle.

On raised homes rebuilt after Sandy, downspouts run long distances down tall walls and pilings, so we add extra straps and keep the pipe tight against the structure where wind can't rattle it loose. Newly roofed homes deserve one more note: fresh asphalt shingles from any maker, GAF and Owens Corning included, shed loose granules for the first year or so, so expect some grit early on. Keeping needles out long term is where gutter guards come in.

What a well-built gutter system should include

Use this list when comparing estimates. If one of these is missing, it's fair to ask why.

  • One-piece runs with seams only at corners and end caps
  • Hidden hangers screwed in, not spikes driven through the face
  • Drip edge or gutter apron overhanging into the trough
  • A steady fall toward every outlet, with no flat spots
  • Downspouts sized to the roof area each one serves
  • Outlets placed so no single downspout carries two big valleys
  • Discharge that carries water several feet away from the foundation
  • Sound fascia behind the gutter, replaced or capped in aluminum where needed

Why gutters work harder around Toms River

Nor'easters here drive heavy rain sideways for hours, and summer thunderstorms off the bay can put down an inch in a short burst. Gutters that are undersized or pitched flat simply overflow, sending water down the siding and into window heads. Long eaves on 1960s ranches and steep roof planes on newer colonials both funnel a lot of runoff into a few corners.

Salt air is the other factor. Near the bay and on the barrier island, painted aluminum holds up well, but cheap steel spikes and uncoated screws rust and let gutters sag within a few years, so we use stainless or coated fasteners there. For more on how coastal exposure shapes material choices, see our post on roofing near salt water. Homes in Brick along the Metedeconk River deal with the same mix of wind, salt and leaf fall.

Questions homeowners ask us

Are seamless gutters worth it over sectional gutters in Toms River?

For most homes, yes. Sectional gutters have a joint every 10 feet or so, and each one is a spot where sealant ages, drips and eventually lets the run sag. Seamless gutters run in one piece from corner to corner, so the only joints are at the miters and end caps, which we seal and rivet.

Should my Ocean County home have 5 inch or 6 inch gutters?

Most ranches, capes and split-levels do fine with 5 inch gutters when downspouts are spaced sensibly. We suggest 6 inch for large or steep roofs, homes where two valleys empty into the same corner, and two-story colonials with long eaves. Bigger gutters also cope better with heavy pine needle fall.

How long do aluminum seamless gutters last on a Jersey Shore home?

Properly hung aluminum gutters commonly last 20 years or more here. What usually fails first isn't the aluminum, it's the fasteners, the sealant at the corners or the fascia behind the trough. Hidden hangers screwed into solid wood, coated fasteners near salt water and clear troughs all stretch that life out.

Can you install seamless gutters on a raised home near the Toms River barrier island?

Yes. Raised homes mean taller ladders or lifts, longer downspouts and more exposure to wind, so we space hangers closer, strap downspouts at shorter intervals and plan discharge around stairs, decks and parking under the house. The gutters themselves are made on site the same way as on any other home.

What gutter colors work well on Toms River shore homes?

Aluminum gutter coil comes in a wide range of factory-painted colors, from white and almond to darker browns, grays and black. Most people pick a color that blends with the trim or fascia so the gutters disappear. On darker homes, a gutter that ties to the window trim can look sharp too. We bring color samples to the estimate.
